Aloe ‘Wrasse’ is a compact hybrid aloe from Larry Weisel’s Fish Series, a collection of cultivars selected for their unusual foliage patterns, vivid coloration, and small stature. It forms dense clusters of star-shaped rosettes typically 4 to 6 inches tall and 6 to 8 inches wide, gradually spreading through offsets to create tight ornamental colonies. The narrow, lance-shaped leaves are gray-green to blue-green and heavily decorated with irregular cream, pale orange, or whitish markings arranged in bands, rows, and broken zigzag patterns across both surfaces. Raised bumps often occur in orderly rows, adding texture, while fine reddish-orange teeth line the margins. In bright light, cool weather, or under mild drought stress, the foliage can develop striking pink, coral, copper, red, and purplish tones, enhancing the intricate patterning that inspired its fish-themed name. Slender inflorescences may carry pink tubular flowers at various times of year, attracting hummingbirds and beneficial insects, though the plant is grown primarily for its decorative foliage. Developed by hybridizer Larry Weisel and introduced through Rancho Tissue Technologies, ‘Wrasse’ was selected specifically for its colorful markings and compact growth habit. It performs best in well-drained soil with full sun to bright exposure, where its strongest coloration develops, and requires only occasional irrigation once established. Suitable for USDA Zones 9a–12, it should be protected from prolonged frost and freezing temperatures. Its small size and detailed foliage make it especially useful in containers, succulent bowls, rock gardens, and patio displays where the intricate leaf patterns can be appreciated up close.
