Aloe yavellana ‘Gilfrid Powys’, often called Powys Yavello Aloe, is an evergreen, shrubby aloe grown for its branching structure and textured foliage rather than for compact rosette form. It is a cultivated selection associated with Aloe yavellana, a species native to southwestern Ethiopia, and remains uncommon in cultivation, where it is mainly grown by collectors and dry-garden enthusiasts. Plants develop an open, spreading habit made up of multiple rosettes borne on branching stems and basal offsets, forming a loose shrub typically 3 to 4 feet tall and 4 to 6 feet wide. Leaves are long and tapering, often around 12 inches in length, blue-green to gray-green with a matte to lightly glaucous surface, and may develop bronze or purplish tones along the margins and tips in strong sun. Margins carry stout, evenly spaced teeth that are pale to reddish and clearly defined. Flowering usually occurs from late summer into fall, sometimes repeating at other times, with branched racemes held at or slightly above the foliage. Buds are reddish with pale markings, opening to violet-red to grayish purple flowers that differ from those described for wild populations. This cultivar traces to material reportedly collected in Ethiopia by Gilfrid Powys and is maintained under his name due to differences from the original species description. It grows best in full sun to partial shade in very well-drained soil, with low water and dry conditions between irrigations, and is estimated to tolerate brief cold to about 25–30°F.
