Cleistocactus strausii, commonly known as Silver Torch, is a columnar cactus native to the high-altitude regions of Bolivia, where it thrives on dry, rocky slopes at elevations between 4,920 and 9,840 feet. Its slender, erect stems grow up to 10 feet tall and are densely covered in white, hair-like spines, giving it a silvery appearance. The plant develops multiple offsets from the base, forming a shrubby growth habit. Flowering occurs in late summer once the plant exceeds 18 inches in height, producing deep red, tubular flowers that emerge horizontally along the stems. The blooms do not fully open, with only the style and stamens protruding, followed by small, round red fruits containing seeds. This species requires full sun, well-draining soil, and infrequent watering during the growing season, with a dry winter dormancy period to prevent rot. Hardy to USDA Zones 9a-11b, it tolerates temperatures as low as 20°F but should be protected from prolonged frost. It is widely used as a vertical accent in xeriscapes, rock gardens, and arid landscapes, and its striking silvery appearance and red blooms make it an excellent choice for container cultivation.
