Cordyline australis ‘Torbay Dazzler’ is a variegated, palm-like evergreen tree selected for its cream-edged foliage, upright habit, and tolerance of dry and coastal conditions. It develops one or more slender trunks that branch with age, each topped by dense heads of narrow, strap-like leaves held stiffly upright, creating a strong vertical outline. Mature plants commonly reach 15 to 20 feet tall and about 5 to 10 feet wide over time, with a slow to moderate growth rate. In late spring to summer, established specimens produce large, airy panicles of small, fragrant white flowers that attract pollinators and may be followed by berries in mild climates. The species Cordyline australis is native to New Zealand, and this cultivar originated at Torbay Palm Farm in Cornwall, England, later receiving the Royal Horticultural Society Award of Garden Merit for reliability in gardens. It grows best in full sun to light shade in well-drained soil and is drought tolerant once established, though young plants benefit from regular watering. Cold tolerance extends to about 15°F when sheltered. It is well suited as a specimen tree, container plant, or architectural accent in coastal, dry, or Mediterranean-style landscapes.
