Drimia maritima, also known as Sea Squill or Sea Onion, is a bulbous plant native to the Mediterranean region, including southern Europe, western Asia, and northern Africa. Characterized by its basal, strap-shaped leaves that persist through late fall to summer, this plant produces tall flower stalks up to 7 feet high, crowned with clusters of star-shaped white flowers that bloom in late summer and fall. Some varieties display pinkish tinges or a pink midrib on the petals. The bulb, typically partially exposed, can divide into multiple bulbs, forming large clumps over time. Sea Squill thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers well-drained sandy or rocky soils, though it can tolerate heavier soils if planted on a slope or mound. It is drought-tolerant once established and requires minimal watering, especially during its dormant winter phase. Hardy in USDA Zones 8a-11b, it can survive temperatures down to 20-25°F but benefits from frost protection. Grown for its striking flower spikes, it is used in dry garden landscapes and makes an excellent cut flower. Its bulb has historical medicinal uses but is toxic to mammals if ingested, requiring caution around pets and livestock.
