Dyckia ‘Jim’s Red’ is a terrestrial bromeliad cultivar grown for its bold red foliage and sharply architectural rosettes, making it a striking accent in succulent gardens and containers. It forms dense clumps of stiff, symmetrical rosettes that typically reach about 18 inches across, gradually expanding through offsets into colonies that can approach roughly 2 feet tall and wide over time. Leaves are strap-shaped and broad at the base, tapering toward pointed tips, with pronounced marginal spines that create a strongly serrated outline. In full sun the foliage develops deep red to reddish-purple tones, intensifying the plant’s sculptural appearance and contrast with surrounding greenery. Flowering occurs later than in many Dyckia, usually in late summer through fall, when slender upright stalks rise above the rosettes bearing clusters of orange flowers along wand-like inflorescences. The cultivar is believed to be a hybrid associated with plants distributed by California dyckia hybridizer Bill Baker of California Gardens Nursery and reportedly came from the garden of Santa Barbara collector Jim Prine, from whom the name is derived. Dyckia ‘Jim’s Red’ grows best in full sun with excellent drainage and sparse irrigation once established, tolerating dry conditions and responding well to gritty soils or raised beds. It has shown notable cold tolerance for a bromeliad, reportedly withstanding temperatures around 18°F in well-drained conditions, and is used as a structural focal plant in xeric landscapes, rock gardens, and large containers.
