Dyckia ‘Naked Lady’ is a terrestrial bromeliad of garden origin grown for its bright green foliage, clumping habit, and the unusual absence of marginal spines, a trait that sets it apart from most members of the genus. It forms colonies of glossy, strap-shaped leaves in low rosettes, with individual plants reaching about 1 foot tall and 1–2 feet wide, spreading gradually over time. The leaves are lime to vivid green with a smooth, polished surface and gently recurved form, ending in a sharp, rigid tip despite lacking teeth along the margins. Flowering occurs in spring, when tall, wand-like inflorescences rise above the foliage carrying orange to yellow-orange flowers, with bloom most reliable in bright shade or morning sun. The plant originated in cultivation and was discovered by Vivienne Doney at her Monrovia nursery, with the name suggested by John Bleck in the 1960s in reference to its “bare” leaf edges; it has also circulated as ‘Nude Lady’ and is thought to be a hybrid of Dyckia encholirioides and Dyckia brevifolia. It prefers well-drained soil, occasional to moderate watering with drying between irrigations, and tolerates both garden beds and containers. Cold tolerance is relatively high for a bromeliad, with plants handling brief exposure to around 18–20°F when sheltered. Dyckia ‘Naked Lady’ is especially useful in containers, shaded succulent gardens, and mixed xeric plantings where its approachable texture and bright foliage can be appreciated, though placement should still account for its pointed leaf tips and potential browsing by rabbits.
