Dyckia ‘Precious Metal’ is a terrestrial bromeliad of garden origin selected for its striking metallic foliage and bold spring flower display, forming broad, low rosettes that spread outward rather than upward. Individual rosettes remain under a foot tall and typically reach 12 to 18 inches across, while mature clumps can spread 2 to 3 feet wide over time. The narrow, stiff leaves are arranged symmetrically from a central crown and display pale lavender-purple to dusty violet tones, heavily dusted with silvery scurf on the upper surface and distinctly silver beneath, giving the plant a reflective, metallic quality in strong sun. In mid to late spring, stout, upright, unbranched flower stalks rise 2 to 3 feet above the foliage, bearing bright orange to red-orange flowers that contrast strongly with the cool-toned leaves. This cultivar is a Dyckia fosteriana hybrid selected from unnamed plants grown in the Santa Barbara garden of the late Jim Prine and later named by San Marcos Growers to distinguish it from similar clones in circulation. It performs best in full sun with very well-drained soil and sparse to occasional irrigation, thriving in summer-dry conditions once established. Cold hardiness is generally reported around 20–25°F, with better tolerance when kept dry. Dyckia ‘Precious Metal’ is well suited to xeric gardens, containers, and architectural plantings where its metallic foliage can be appreciated at close range, though its stiff leaves warrant placement away from foot traffic.
