Dyckia ‘Silver Superstar’ is a slow-growing, evergreen terrestrial bromeliad selected for its low, flattened rosettes of silvery foliage and its tolerance of dry, exposed conditions. Plants form compact, ground-hugging rosettes typically under a foot tall and 1 to 2 feet wide, composed of stiff, narrow leaves densely armed with sharp marginal spines. The foliage is predominantly silver to silvery gray, often developing a pale pink cast in strong sun, giving the plant a metallic, almost frosted appearance that contrasts well with greener succulents. Growth is deliberate, with plants offsetting slowly over time to form small clumps while retaining a tidy, controlled habit. In summer, upright flowering spikes rise well above the foliage, reaching up to about 3 feet tall and carrying bright orange, tubular, nectar-rich flowers that attract hummingbirds and other pollinators. Unlike many monocarpic succulents, flowering does not kill the rosette. ‘Silver Superstar’ is of garden origin, believed to trace back to Dyckia forsteriana–type hybrids circulated among California collectors, including material from the Santa Barbara garden of Jim Prine, with possible involvement of bromeliad hybridizer Bill Baker. It performs best in full sun with excellent drainage and infrequent watering, is drought tolerant once established, and tolerates cold to roughly 20–25°F when kept dry, making it well suited to containers, rock gardens, and carefully sited xeric plantings away from foot traffic.
