Euphorbia antisyphilitica, commonly known as Candelilla, is a perennial succulent native to the Chihuahuan Desert, including regions in Texas, New Mexico, and Mexico. Belonging to the Euphorbiaceae family, it is recognized for its upright, candle-like stems and medicinal history. The plant forms dense clumps of slender, waxy, gray-green stems up to 30 inches tall, which are about the thickness of a pencil. Largely leafless, it has inconspicuous leaves that drop quickly in dry conditions. Candelilla produces small, cream-colored flowers with a pinkish-red center, primarily blooming in spring and summer and sometimes into early autumn. Native to the Chihuahuan Desert, its name refers to its historical use in treating syphilis, and its wax has been traditionally harvested for candles, soap, and polish. Thriving in full sun or partial shade, it prefers well-draining limestone soils but can adapt to sandy soils or a good cactus mix. The plant requires deep, infrequent watering and is heat tolerant, withstanding temperatures down to 28°F (USDA zones 8-11). Candelilla is hardy to temperatures around 10°F to 15°F (USDA zones 8a-11) and can tolerate mild frost. Ideal for rock, succulent, and desert gardens, its tall, slim growth suits narrow planting strips and accent specimens. Its wax has various practical uses, making it valuable for xeriscapes and low-maintenance gardens.
