Gasteria glomerata, commonly known as ox tongue or Kouga gasteria, is a small, slow-growing succulent endemic to a narrow region of the Eastern Cape of South Africa, where it grows on shaded cliffs and rocky slopes. It forms low, stemless rosettes typically 2 to 4 inches tall that gradually spread into dense clusters 8 to 12 inches wide through basal offsets. Leaves are short, thick, and strap-shaped, usually 1 to 2 inches long, with a gray-green to slightly glaucous coloration and a somewhat rough texture. They are arranged in a distinctive distichous pattern, forming two opposite ranks, and often recurve slightly, giving the plant a compact, ground-hugging profile that sets it apart from larger gasterias. Flowering occurs primarily in spring, with slender, arching inflorescences reaching up to about 8 inches long and bearing small clusters of pendent, tubular flowers with a swollen base, typically reddish to orange with green-tipped ends. Native to the Kouga River region near Kouga Dam, the species was described in 1991 by Ernst van Jaarsveld and remains a localized endemic. In cultivation it performs best in well-drained soil with light shade to partial sun, benefiting from occasional watering during active growth while drying between irrigations. It is moderately cold tolerant to about 20–25°F and is well suited to containers, shaded succulent plantings, indoor culture, and small-scale rock garden use where its compact form can be appreciated up close.
