Gonialoe variegata, formerly known as Aloe variegata and commonly called Tiger Aloe or Partridge-breasted Aloe, is a compact succulent native to South Africa and southern Namibia, prized for its distinctive patterned foliage and architectural growth habit. It typically forms a stemless to short-stemmed rosette 8 to 12 inches tall and wide, composed of thick, triangular leaves arranged in a striking three-ranked pattern when young. The dark green leaves are heavily marked with irregular white to pale green bands formed by merged spots and streaks, creating one of the most recognizable foliage patterns among succulents. As plants mature, the leaf arrangement gradually becomes more spiral while retaining a strongly geometric appearance. Small white teeth line the leaf margins, and the foliage may develop bronze, reddish-brown, or chocolate tones during drought, cold weather, or periods of intense sun exposure. Mature plants slowly produce offsets, eventually forming attractive clusters.

Flowering occurs from winter into early spring, when stout stalks 12 to 18 inches tall rise above the foliage bearing pendent tubular flowers in shades of coral pink, salmon, or orange-red, often with green-tipped segments. Native to rocky, semi-arid regions where it frequently grows among stones or beneath protective shrubs, this species has one of the longest documented histories in cultivation, having been grown in Cape Town gardens since the late seventeenth century. Modern taxonomic research has placed it in the separate genus Gonialoe, recognizing its distinct characteristics and evolutionary relationships.

Tiger Aloe performs best in sharply drained soil with full sun to partial sun and requires deep but infrequent watering, allowing the soil to dry completely between irrigations. It is highly adaptable to containers, rock gardens, xeriscapes, and indoor culture where bright light is available. Generally hardy to about 20–25°F when kept dry, it is best suited to USDA Zones 9a–11b. Its compact size, bold leaf markings, and year-round ornamental value make it an excellent foreground accent, container specimen, or companion plant for agaves, gasterias, echeverias, and other drought-tolerant succulents.
