The Totem Pole Cactus is a slow-growing, naturally occurring monstrose form of Lophocereus schottii, also known as Pachycereus schottii f. monstrosus. It develops upright, columnar stems with smooth green skin and an unusual pattern of irregular ribs, rounded knobs and fleshy folds. Unlike the normal senita cactus, the Totem Pole form is essentially spineless, giving the stems a sculptural appearance that resembles carved stone or wood. Plants generally branch from the base and can eventually form a cluster of upright columns, with mature stems reaching well over 10 feet in favorable conditions. Some specimens develop particularly irregular or spiraling growth as they age. The Totem Pole Cactus is slow growing and best treated as a specimen plant rather than a quick-growing landscape filler. Grow it in full sun or very bright light and sharply drained, gritty soil. Allow the soil to dry completely between thorough waterings and keep it considerably drier during cool weather. It is highly drought tolerant and more cold tolerant than many columnar cacti, but prolonged freezing should still be avoided. Its spineless stems make it useful near paths, patios and other areas where a large cactus might otherwise present a problem. The Totem Pole Cactus is particularly well suited to dry gardens, cactus and succulent collections, gravel gardens and large containers where its unusual growth form can be appreciated.
