Nolina longifolia, commonly known as the Mexican Grass Tree or Weeping Palmita, is a slow-growing, evergreen succulent native to the dry forests of Oaxaca and Puebla, Mexico. It forms a tree-like silhouette over time, with a stout, upright trunk reaching 10 to 15 feet tall and a wide crown of long, arching gray-green leaves that can grow 3 to 5 feet in length. The foliage is soft and pliable, giving younger plants a resemblance to the Bottle Palm but without a swollen base. Mature specimens develop a bold, symmetrical form and may flower in spring or summer, producing 4- to 6-foot-tall branched spikes with small, white to cream-colored flowers on separate male and female plants. Flowering is uncommon and typically limited to older individuals. Nolina longifolia is drought-tolerant, thriving in full sun and well-drained, gritty soil with only occasional deep watering in summer and very little in winter. It is hardy to about 20–25°F, possibly lower in protected spots, making it suitable for USDA Zones 8–10. Long cultivated in California, this plant is featured in major dry garden collections and offers architectural interest as a focal point in xeriscapes, cactus gardens, or large containers. Its low maintenance needs, resistance to deer, and long lifespan make it a valuable addition to dry landscapes.
