Sedum clavatum, often called Tiscalatengo Gorge sedum, is a low-growing evergreen succulent from central Mexico grown for its compact, glaucous rosettes and reliable spring bloom. It forms creeping stems that root as they spread, each tipped with tight rosettes about 2 inches across, typically creating mats around 4 inches tall. The thick, club-shaped leaves are milky blue-green and may blush pink at the tips in bright light or cool weather, giving the plant a soft, frosted look. In mid to late spring, short lateral inflorescences carry clusters of small, white, star-shaped flowers that can develop a faint pink cast with age. Native to cliffs along the Tiscalatengo River gorge, it is adapted to sharp drainage and dry conditions. In cultivation it performs best in porous, well-drained soil with bright light, tolerating full sun in coastal climates and light shade inland. Water sparingly, allowing soil to dry between irrigations, as excess moisture is the main cause of loss. It can handle brief dips into the upper 20s °F when dry. In gardens it works well as a small groundcover, in rock and crevice gardens, troughs, or containers where its rosettes can spill gently over edges.
