Trichocereus candicans, commonly known as the Argentine Giant Cactus, is a low-growing, clump-forming columnar cactus native to Argentina. It produces thick, ribbed stems covered in golden to yellowish spines and large, fragrant white flowers that open at night, attracting nocturnal pollinators such as moths and bats. Growing up to 2-3 feet tall and spreading 10 feet wide, its sprawling stems are medium to yellowish-green with 9-11 ribs and clusters of yellow to brownish spines. Blooming in late spring to early summer, the funnelform flowers measure 7-10 inches long and remain open into the afternoon. Native to regions such as Mendoza and Córdoba, it thrives in arid landscapes and rocky soils up to 6,500 feet in elevation. It prefers full sun, well-drained soil, and minimal watering, especially in winter. Hardy to 17-20°F, it is well-suited for xeriscapes, rock gardens, and desert landscapes, where it functions as both a specimen plant and a sprawling ground cover. It is also widely used in hybrid breeding and as rootstock for grafting.
