Aloe "Kujo"

Aloe ‘Kujo’, commonly known as Kujo Aloe, is a clumping hybrid Aloe developed at the Huntington Botanical Gardens in Pasadena, California, during the 1970s. It forms dense, stemless clusters of strong, fairly open rosettes with thick, erect, glossy green leaves marked with irregular elongated creamy-white spots on both surfaces. Prominent reddish-brown teeth line the leaf margins. The inflorescences rise well above the foliage and carry dense, contracted, conical to somewhat rounded racemes of short, open-mouthed orange flowers with darker purplish-brown tips and narrow white margins. ‘Kujo’ can flower intermittently throughout the year and tolerates light frost. It was selected from the same cross as Aloe ‘Sophie’, using Aloe sinkatana and Aloe harlana as parents, and the two cultivars are notably similar in growth and foliage, differing primarily in flower color: ‘Kujo’ has orange flowers while ‘Sophie’ has yellow. The cultivar was named for Jacob Lyons, son of Gary and Shannon Lyons, whose stage name is Kujo. Its dense clumping habit, spotted foliage, and extended flowering period make it suitable for succulent gardens, containers, and other dry landscape settings.
